The first Russian license plates and a basic registration system were rolled out in the 1920s, but had huge variances and the system was not well standardized. In 1931 Russia (the Soviet Union) standardized things like license plate size, placement and character size. This system continued until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. 
Our Russian license plate is a fairly exact replica of the current Russian tag. Please note, our novelty version of the official Russian license plate does not offer different sizes for the "main text" area. The "main text" area is all the same font size and weight. To the right of the main text is a rectangle area with a 2 or 3 digit customization field (for the region code). You can put up to 3 numbers in. It is also a good spot to put a special two digit "year" that holds significance! Below the region code is the country code, "RUS" which stands for Russia. To the right of the words are a small Russian flag.
